Unprecedented Federal energy efficiency improvement incentives for homeowners, builders and building owners

The Inflation Reduction Act of 2022 (IRA) is the largest ever climate investment by the Federal Government in American history, projected to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) by 31% to 44% below the 2005 levels by 2030. The IRA will also bring energy bill relief to U.S. households by incentivizing the adoption of more efficient, all-electric appliances. Importantly, the IRA recognizes the key role of highly efficient, variable-capacity heat pumps in slashing domestic GHG emissions and lowering energy costs for Americans.

The 25c & HEEHRP Tax Credits

The two notable incentives for homeowners are the 25C tax credit and the Home Energy Efficiency and Resiliency Rebate Program (HEEHRP) tax credit. Both of these rebates were designed to incentivize homeowners to invest in energy-efficient equipment.

The 25C tax credit offers a 10% credit for the cost, up to $500 or a specific amount from $50-$300, based on the type of equipment installed. On the other hand, the HEEHRP tax credit is more comprehensive and attractive. It provides up to $2,500 in rebates for any qualifying energy efficiency improvements in residential properties.

While both credits aim to improve energy efficiency, the HEEHRP is more generous and covers a broader range of improvements, making it the more beneficial option for homeowners considering significant upgrades.
